Indore:

He looked like an ordinary person—a white shirt, jeans on his body, and a black cap on his head—but behind this simple exterior was a dreaded criminal whose name in police files has become synonymous with terror and brutality. Aqeel alias 'Nitra,' a 29-year-old resident of Indore's Khajrana area, is the criminal who allegedly molested two players of the Australian women's cricket team in broad daylight, staining not only Indore's reputation but also the international image of the entire country.

How did the Police Arrest Him?

When Aqeel rode out on his bike on the morning of October 23, his face was unconcerned, but a few hours later, when the police caught him, his leg and hand were broken, encased in a cast, and his face was smeared with fear. His arrest, after a six-hour chase, brought relief to the police, but it put the city's security system in the dock. Open the police records, and Aqeel's name is found on every page of crime. However, the investigation revealed that the accused is a painter by profession and his parents are laborers.

10 Criminal Cases—ranging from molestation, robbery, dacoity, to attempt to murder. Four cases are lodged at the Khajrana police station, and the rest in Azad Nagar, where he had been living for the past few months. In the area, he was known as “Nitra,” a goon who feared neither the police nor the law.

When did the Incident Occur?

According to sources, when the two foreign cricketers were walking towards 'The Neighborhood Cafe' on Khajrana Road, Aqeel approached them. He pretended to take a selfie and, in a moment, allegedly committed an indecent act. He immediately turned his bike and fled, but a few minutes later, he returned and allegedly molested the second player before escaping again. Both players were distraught. They immediately sent an SOS alert with their "live location" to the team's Security Manager, Danny Simmons. Upon receiving the complaint, the Indore Police Commissionerate launched the city's fastest operation. Teams from five police stations—Khajrana, MIG, Vijay Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, and Banganga—entered the field simultaneously. CCTV footage was examined, the bike was identified, and a six-hour, high-voltage pursuit began.

Aqeel Has Been a Habitual Offender

According to police records, Aqeel's crime is not new. He is a notorious and habitual offender, with 10 serious cases registered against him, including molestation, robbery, dacoity, assault, and attempt to murder. Four cases are registered at the Khajrana police station. Due to increasing police pressure, he had started living in the Azad Nagar area. Sources suggest that this is not his first crime against women. After being released on parole last year, he allegedly attacked a couple with a knife and tried to molest the woman in the Kanadiya area. In another incident, he reportedly tried to snatch a rifle from policemen in Ujjain and fire at them. He had served a 10-year sentence in Bhairavgarh Jail and was released only four months ago.

After his release, he again walked the same path—this time, international players became his target.

Case Registered by Security In-charge Danny Simmons

The team's Security In-charge, Danny Simmons, lodged a complaint at the MIG police station. Based on the complaint, a case has been registered under sections 74 and 78 of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), Rajesh Dandotiya, stated, "A case has been registered based on the complaint of the Australian team's security in-charge. The accused, Aqeel, already has several cases registered against him. He was arrested within six hours through an intensive strategic operation."

Outrage Across the Country

The incident sparked outrage across the entire state. Madhya Pradesh Sports Minister Vishwas Sarang said, "This incident is extremely shameful. The accused has been arrested, and the administration has taken immediate action. He will be given such a punishment that will set an example for others." Meanwhile, BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma said, "The National Security Act (NSA) will be invoked against Aqeel, and a public procession will also be taken out. Whether the daughter is from Australia or England, their safety is our responsibility."

Aqeel's arrest is not just the story of one criminal, but the story of the system's failure. A criminal who commits a new crime every time he is released from jail is now back behind bars, with a broken leg, plastered hand, and head bowed in shame. But the question remains... is Indore, which calls itself a “safe city,” truly safe?
