👉 Government set on path to play victim of youth to hide its failures

New Delhi, February 26 (Manpreet Singh Khalsa):— Shiromani Akali Dal’s Delhi unit president S. Paramjit Singh Sarna has accused the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government of reviving a dangerous culture of police encounters in the state for political gains through a fake encounter of the youth allegedly accused in the murder of Gurdaspur police personnel. Reacting to reports that one of the three accused in the killing of an Assistant Sub-Inspector and a Home Guard jawan at Adhiyan check post near the international border was killed in police firing near Puranshala on Gurdaspur Mukerian road, Sarna said that the sequence of events raises serious questions about due process and accountability. Punjab Police has said that one of the suspects in the killing of ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard Ashok Kumar, Ranjit Singh, was shot dead in an encounter, while another accused has been arrested and the third is absconding. Sarna alleged that such encounter killings are damaging to people's faith in the rule of law and are politically motivated. The government has resorted to playing the victim of Punjab's youth to hide its failures. It has become a well-known fact among the people of the state that Punjab has completely become a police state. Anyone and anywhere can be killed in an encounter. Sarna demanded a time-bound judicial inquiry under the supervision of a sitting High Court judge into this alleged encounter, saying that if this phenomenon is not stopped here, it will create serious problems for the state. Finally, Sarna said that the people of Punjab deserve transparency and constitutional policing. Only a high-level investigation into this encounter to establish facts and accountability and appropriate legal action against the culprits can restore people's faith.
