Kabaddi Promoter Shot Dead in Mohali During Live Tournament
Attackers Approached on Pretext of Taking Selfie, Fired at Head; Bambiha Gang Claims Responsibility
Mohali witnessed a shocking incident on Monday when firing broke out during an ongoing kabaddi match in Sohana. Assailants traveling in a Bolero opened fire, critically injuring kabaddi promoter and player Rana Balachauria, who was shot in the head. He was rushed to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Rana Balachauria had reportedly gotten married just 10 days ago. Eyewitnesses said the attackers approached him pretending to be fans seeking a selfie and suddenly opened fire.
The Bambiha gang has claimed responsibility for the attack. Notably, Punjabi singer Mankirt Aulakh was scheduled to attend the tournament, but the incident occurred nearly half an hour before his arrival. Police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area.
Six Rounds Fired, Panic Among Spectators
The incident took place at the Sector-82 ground, where the kabaddi match was underway. Initially, spectators mistook the sound of gunfire for firecrackers. Eyewitnesses reported around six rounds being fired before the attackers fled. Bullets were also reported to have passed over the heads of spectators, causing panic.
The kabaddi cup was being organized by the Gurdwara Management Committee and Vedwan Sports Club, Sohana. As the match was being streamed live, the sound of gunshots was captured on camera.
SSP: Enmity and Gangster Angle Under Probe
Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans stated that only the promoter was targeted in the firing. When people attempted to chase the assailants, they fired 2–3 more rounds. The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained, and the involvement of gangsters is being thoroughly investigated.
According to police, the attackers fired 4 to 5 shots. While a Bolero vehicle has been mentioned, the involvement of other vehicles cannot be ruled out. Some witnesses also reported seeing suspects fleeing on motorcycles. The number of attackers is believed to be between three and four. Possible rivalry with the Bambiha gang, including links to gangster Lucky Patial, is also being examined.
Promoter for Just One Year
Rana Balachauria’s real name was Kanwar Digvijay Singh. Besides being a kabaddi player, he was also involved in acting. He had been working as a kabaddi team promoter for the past year and had brought two teams to the Sohana Kabaddi Cup. Originally from Balachaur, he had been residing in Mohali for some time.
Match commentator Sewak Shergarh said Rana Balachauria was the manager of the Shakarpur team from Jalandhar. After arranging the semi-final match tie, he was leaving the ground when the attackers came close under the pretext of taking photographs and shot him in the head.
