Sacred Gurudwara at Bahadurgarh near Patiala Marks the Divine Presence of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji

Report from Patiala

Just eight kilometers from Patiala, in the historic town of Bahadurgarh, stands a revered Gurudwara commemorating the visits of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the Ninth Guru of the Sikhs — known as the “Protector of Dharma” and “Hind di Chadar.” This sacred site is deeply respected by devotees of all faiths from across India and abroad.

Historical records state that Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, after celebrating Dussehra at Anandpur Sahib on 25 Assu 1722 Bikrami Samvat, traveled with his family — Mata Nanaki Ji, Mata Gujri Ji — and around 300 devoted Sikhs, including Bhai Nathu Ram’s Rababi Jatha and Mama Kirpal Chand Ji. Upon reaching the town then known as Saifabad (now Bahadurgarh), they were warmly received by Nawab Saifuddin, who requested Guru Ji to stay and offered him rest at the Panchvati Garden. Later, Saifuddin took Guru Ji and Mata Ji to his palace with utmost reverence.

As a mark of devotion, Nawab Saifuddin arranged utensils, tents, camels, and provisions for the Langar and even presented a fine horse to Guru Ji and a chariot to Mata Ji. Guru Ji stayed in Bahadurgarh for nine days before departing, blessing the town and promising to return. From there, Guru Ji proceeded towards Dukhniwaran Sahib, Lehal, and Ablowal, continuing his journey towards Assam.

Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji returned to Bahadurgarh during his second major journey in Bikrami Samvat 1732 (1675 CE), after hearing the plea of the Kashmiri Pandits who sought protection from Mughal persecution under Aurangzeb. Accompanied by devoted Sikhs including Bhai Mati Das Ji, Bhai Sati Das Ji, Bhai Dyal Das Ji, Bhai Gurditta Ji, Bhai Uda Ji, and Rathaur Ji, Guru Ji once again blessed this land with his divine presence.

Guru Ji stayed in Bahadurgarh for over three months and two days, imparting spiritual wisdom and blessings to the local devotees. On Nawab Saifuddin’s humble request, Guru Ji even visited the fort, where a magnificent Gurudwara now stands in his sacred memory.

After departing from Bahadurgarh on 17 Assu 1732 Bikrami (1675 CE), Guru Ji visited Gurdwara Moti Bagh Sahib (Patiala), Samana, Agra, and finally reached Delhi, where he was imprisoned under severe conditions and ultimately sacrificed his life to uphold the freedom of faith.

Several historical Gurdwaras across Patiala district are blessed by Guru Ji’s divine presence, but Bahadurgarh holds a special place in the hearts of devotees, as Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji stayed here twice — once for over three months.

A devotee from Delhi, Sukhpal Singh, shared, “Whenever I visit Patiala, I make it a point to bow my head at this Gurudwara. Every wish made here at the Guru’s door has always been fulfilled.”

This sacred Gurudwara remains a beacon of faith, unity, and devotion — reminding generations of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji’s supreme sacrifice and message of righteousness.
