'No Kings' movement intensifies in America, thousands take to the streets against Trump
New Delhi March 29 (Manpreet Singh Khalsa):- A month after the US-Israeli joint military operation against Iran, large-scale protests have once again erupted in several American cities under the "No Kings" movement. According to Al Jazeera, the marches and rallies on Saturday, March 28, marked the third major phase of the "No Kings" movement during President Donald Trump's second term. Organizers said that more than 3,300 events were planned in all 50 states. Large crowds were seen in major cities like New York, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., while parallel events were held in international cities like Rome, Paris and Berlin. However, this time the movement's strategy was not limited to just large metropolitan areas. Organizers specifically focused on areas that are generally considered conservative. They claim that about two-thirds of the participants attended events held outside major cities.
According to Leah Greenberg, co-founder of the progressive organization Indivisible, “The big story this time is not just how many people took to the streets, but where they took to the streets.”
The main event was held in the Minneapolis-St. Paul region of Minnesota, known as the Twin Cities, which has been the focus of the Trump administration’s tough immigration policies in recent months.
More than 3,000 federal agents were deployed in December as part of Operation Metro Surge, which was launched after allegations of excessive force during deportation proceedings.
In January, two American citizens (Alex Pretty and Renee Nicole Good) were shot and killed during the campaign. The incident sparked nationwide outrage and calls for reform. Dozens of lawsuits were filed against the campaign, which was eventually dismissed in February. Saturday’s protest paid tribute to his memory, featuring speeches, musical performances and participation by activists, labor leaders and politicians. Progressive leader Bernie Sanders addressed the crowd, while legendary rock artist Bruce Springsteen and folk singer Joan Baez performed. Actor Robert De Niro encouraged the protesters with a recorded message. He said, “Your courage and commitment have inspired us all. You have demonstrated the power of nonviolent resistance.” In Washington, D.C., protesters rallied around the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, holding placards and waving effigies of symbols of the Trump administration. “No Kings” protests in June and October drew millions. After the October demonstration, Trump shared an AI-generated video on social media in which he was seen mocking the protesters. Meanwhile, preparations for the midterm elections in the US in November have intensified. Trump's Republican Party is trying to maintain its lead in both houses of Congress, while the Democratic Party hopes to increase its seats. During the protest, Bernie Sanders urged people to actively participate in the elections, saying, "We will not let this country fall into dictatorship or aristocracy because in America, the people are supreme."
