My Story - Escaping Forced Marriage and Standing Up for Your Right to Choose
I am an Indian woman who wants to share my personal experience to raise awareness about forced marriage, threats against women and the consequences of speaking out for personal freedom.
When I was 18, my grandparents tried to force me to marry a politically connected man who was more than a decade older than me. The proposal was made without my consent. I had clearly stated that I did not want this marriage, but my wishes were ignored. I was told that refusing would lead to punishment and shame.
Fearing for my safety and my future, I left India and later came to Canada on a student visa.
There, I rebuilt my life independently and finally married my life partner of my choice. This decision was made freely, legally and mutually Consent was taken - rights that every adult should have.
Despite living abroad, I continue to receive threatening phone calls and text messages from family members in India. I have been accused of insulting my family, and I have been warned that if I return to India, I will face punishment. These threats have caused constant fear and emotional distress.
My husband has political views that support the Khalistan movement, and I have attended peaceful community events with him in Canada. These activities are legal here. However, my relationship with him has intensified the threats made against me.
I am sharing my story not to attack my family, religion or culture, but to highlight a serious issue that many women face in silence. Forced marriage is a violation of human rights. Threats and intimidation should never be used to control a woman's life choices.
I believe that every woman - regardless of background Regardless - it is the right to choose your partner, to live without fear, and to express your beliefs in peace. By telling my story, I hope to promote dialogue, understanding, and safety for women who are at risk but feel they have no voice.
